# How to set up a workshop bench and tool wall

**The short answer**

Set the bench at wrist height — stand with your arms hanging and the top should meet your wrists. Then keep it clear by putting everything you reach for daily on the wall behind it. Fix both the bench and the wall storage into masonry or into studs, never into plasterboard alone.

## Height first, top second

Bench height is the one decision you cannot correct later without taking the whole thing off the wall, and it is the one most often copied from a photograph. Stand where the bench will go with your arms hanging loose: the top wants to meet you at about wrist height. That puts your shoulders over the work with your elbows free, which is where you can push, hold and see all at once.

Adjust from there for what you actually do. Close work you lean into — small assembly, soldering, anything fiddly — is easier an inch or two higher. Work you put your weight behind, planing or heavy filing, is easier an inch or two lower. If the bench has to do both, set it for the work you do most and stand on a board for the rest.

Before anything is drilled, clamp a plank at the height you think you want and spend ten minutes working on it. A bench that is two inches wrong is uncomfortable for as long as you own it, and nobody notices on paper.


## Choosing a top

A folding bracket bench is a pair of brackets and a top you supply, which is the reason to buy that shape rather than a finished bench: you pick the thickness, the depth and the finish, and changing your mind in a year costs the price of a board. Depth matters more than people expect — deep enough to work on, shallow enough that a car door still opens past it.

The thicknesses below are the sizes these boards are usually sold at rather than a specification, so measure what you actually buy. Whatever you choose, run a level across both brackets before the second one is fixed, and oil or seal a timber top if the garage gets damp.

## Where the vice goes

A vice wants to sit over a leg or a bracket rather than in the middle of a span. Almost everything you do in one is a sideways or downward load, and a bench that flexes under it turns filing into an argument. Put it at the end you approach from, so long work sticks out into open space instead of across the bench.

A clamp-on vice earns its place on a bench you would rather not drill four holes through — a rented garage, a folding worktop, a top you fully intend to replace. It needs a clear run of edge with nothing underneath it: no drawer, no apron, no frame rail. Check that before ordering, because it is the thing that most often stops one fitting.

What a clamp-on vice will not do is take a beating. It holds work for cutting, drilling, filing and assembly. Straightening something with a hammer is a job for a vice bolted through the bench, and a bench bolted to the floor.


## The wall behind the bench

The wall directly behind the bench, from eye level down to about shoulder height, is the best storage in the workshop. It should go to the tools you pick up twenty times in an afternoon — drivers, pliers, spanners, a rule — and to nothing else. Seasonal or bulky things belong elsewhere; putting them here is how a bench ends up buried.

Sort the wall by how you identify a tool rather than by what it is. A screwdriver is known by its tip and a spanner by the size stamped on it, so both want to be stood up and read rather than stacked. A numbered rack makes a missing spanner obvious while you can still remember where you were using it, which is worth more than the rack costs.

Power tools are the exception to hanging things on hardboard pegboard. A cordless drill levers on its hook and eventually takes a piece of the board with it. Use a steel rack fixed into the wall, and hang it within a lead of a socket so the batteries charge where the tools live.


## The test is whether putting things away is one movement

A bench is a place to work, not a place to keep things. The honest test of a layout is what happens at the end of a job: if putting a tool away is one movement — reach up, gone — it happens. If it is three movements and a drawer, it does not, and the top is covered again by the weekend.

That is also the argument for splitting storage by how a thing behaves. Sockets, bits and small fixings belong in trays and cases that shut, because they are small and round and they roll. Spanners and drivers belong on the wall, because they are picked up constantly and found by eye. Get that split right and there is nothing left on the bench at the end of the day.
