# Workshop tool walls, racks & parts drawers

The wall behind the bench rather than the bench itself: a four-tier steel wall for up to twelve cordless tools with the batteries underneath, pegboard cradles and a single rail for smaller collections, a slotted spanner sorter, four shallow shelves, and a twenty-five-drawer cabinet for the fixings a bin is too big for. No bench and no vice, for now.

## Before you buy

### Measure your tools before you buy a tool wall

The cradles on the four-tier wall and the pegboard rack suit a standard pistol-grip body. An SDS drill with a side handle, or anything with a large bulbous base, may not sit properly, and on the single rail two fat 5Ah packs side by side can foul each other because the tools hang closer together. Count what you own, look at the shape of it, and buy the rail when you have three drills and the wall when you have twelve.

### The load is what you hang, not the rack

Twelve cordless tools plus their batteries is a serious hanging weight, and on every tool wall the fixings fail before the panel does. Masonry wants frame fixings; a stud wall wants the studs, or a timber batten screwed across several with the rack hung off that. Never plasterboard plugs. None of these lines states its wall fixings, so plan to buy them to suit your wall — and on the long four-tier shelf use every hole, because a long rack on two fixings racks sideways over time.

### Drawers, bins and shelves are three sizes of thing

The parts cabinet is the tier below the tilt bins in Garage, not a replacement for them: screws by the hundred go in bins, grub screws, o-rings, spade terminals and drill bits go in the clear drawers. The four-tier shelf is shallow on purpose, because a deep garage shelf becomes two rows of things with a forgotten row at the back. And mount the spanner sorter at eye level beside the bench rather than above it — a rack you have to reach over a vice for is one you stop putting spanners back into.

Not sure where this fits in the room? How to kit out a man cave (/man-cave) sets out the order to do it in.
