# Garage & workshop lighting

Garage lighting works in three layers — an ambient wash across the ceiling, task light over the bench where you look, and accent light for the corner you want noticed — and most garages have one bulb doing all three badly. Nothing is sourced for this department yet, and the page says so rather than listing lines that do not exist.

### One bulb overhead lights the room, not the job

A single fitting in the middle of the ceiling puts you between the light and the work, so the shadow you are trying to see into is your own. No amount of extra brightness overhead fixes that geometry. Whatever else you fit, add one source you can move and put where you are looking — a bar under a shelf, or a light stuck to the panel you are working on.

### Daylight over the bench, warm over the bar

A fitting around 6500K reads as daylight rather than the warm yellow of a household bulb. Over a bench or a bay that is what you want: colours come back true, and a paint defect or a hairline crack shows up instead of hiding in the yellow. It is the wrong choice for a lounge corner or a bar, where warm light belongs — worth saying, because those two ends of the same building often get lit the same way by accident.

### Mains or rechargeable solve different problems

A mains fitting lights the room and needs wiring or a lampholder that already exists; a rechargeable light goes where the work is, charges over USB, and there is nothing to hard-wire wrong. Most garages want one of each. Check the ingress rating on anything that will meet damp or spray, and treat a listing that quotes none as exactly that — unknown, not fine.

Not sure where this fits in the room? How to kit out a man cave (/man-cave) sets out the order to do it in.
