# Garage storage, shelving & floor tiles

Garage kit that puts things somewhere other than the floor: five-tier boltless shelving that stands against a wall you cannot drill, thirty- and forty-eight-bin tilt-bin racks for the fixings, steel gridwall and vinyl-dipped hooks for the long awkward things, and interlocking floor tiles that click over the slab underneath all of it. Nothing overhead yet.

## Before you buy

### Know what you are fixing into

Work this out before you choose anything. A masonry wall takes a plug and a screw and will hold whatever you hang off it; plasterboard on its own will not, whatever the fixings pack claims, so find the studs or batten across them. Most of the wall-mounted lines here do not state their fixings, so plan to buy plugs to suit your wall. If the wall cannot be drilled at all, the boltless shelving is the answer: it stands against the wall rather than fixing to it.

### A spread load is not a shelf load

The five-tier shelving carries a supplier-stated 175 kg a shelf and 875 kg across the unit, and both figures assume the load spread evenly over a shelf sitting flat on a level floor. That is not 875 kg on one tier, and it is not a single point in the middle of a span. Put the heavy and awkward things on the bottom tier where the frame is stiffest, keep the light bulk up top, and remember a garage floor with a drainage fall is not level.

### Measure the floor before you order tiles

The floor tiles are sold by the tile, so work out your own floor area and add a margin for the cuts around the door frame and any pier. There is no standard British garage size, and the typical figures people quote are usually too big, so measure it rather than working from one. A full parts rack is heavier than it looks and the load hangs off its top edge, so leave clearance in front of it: bins that swing open where a car door swings are bins you stop using by the second week.

Not sure where this fits in the room? How to kit out a man cave (/man-cave) sets out the order to do it in.
